Tsunamis are created when a fault line in the ocean causes an earthqauke. The shock of the quake causes a huge tidal wave that hits the coasts of neighboring countries. The devestation they cause is tragic, but the tide will eventually recede.

Sunday, December 26, 2004 a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck the indian ocean causing a tsunami to hit various countries in Southeast Asia. The wave traveled 1600km from its starting point in Idonesia. The wave hit an estimated nine countries. The countries with the most casualities are Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India. It was the worst natural disaster in history.
What was the effect of the Tsunami?
Close to 227,898 people died in the tsunami and even more are missing. People lost their homes and loved ones. The aftermath of the tsunami was devestating. It would take years for the destruction to clear up, but the people who lost the ones they loved would never forget what happened.
